The U.N’s attempt at peace in Bosnia Essay In this essay the question that I am going to answer is â€Å"Was the United Nations effective in its activities in the Bosnian War?† I am going to show that the U.N was not effective in the activities regarding Bosnia Herzegovina by first providing background on the cause of the war. I will then talk about the U.N’s beginning mandate and the formation of UNPROFOR and how they have attempted to aid Bosnia. That will transition into different perspectives on the U. N’s effectiveness in this world. I will end my paper with the resolution for the Bosnian war and finally conclude with a summary of the essay. Yugoslavia was once a country that bordered Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. In the 1990’s there were a lot of disputes with Yugoslavia from the U.S and Germany. The U.S wanted Yugoslavia to break up because they â€Å"were interested in the more recently established states† (Mahiras) because they controlled key routes through the Balkan Mountains. Germany was interested because as territory of its â€Å"vital interest† Slovenia and Croatia.† In order to obtain this goal the U.S decided to give Yugoslavia and ultimatum that was backed by Germany, and other countries that the U.S â€Å"influenced†, the ultimatum was that â€Å"If Yugoslavia did not announce multi-party elections, it would face economic isolation.† This was the ultimate cause of Yugoslavia’s dismemberment into six different republics which included Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The individual states turned countries sovereignty would be put to the test in the Bosnian war. In each separate republic of what was formerly known as Yugoslavia they had a majority ethnic group. This, however, was not the case of Bosnia, Bosnia in 1991 â€Å"Muslims comprised 44% of the population, Serbs 31%, and Croats 18% with the remainder mixed.† (GOA pg 1)When Bosnia achieved independence there was a civil conflict between the Bosnian Government and the Bosnian Serbs. In order to try and keep the peace the UNPROFOR was first established (UNPROFOR stood for United Nations Protection Force) and they later created a mandate that was extended to Bosnia. Their original mandate was as follows, â€Å"UNPROFORs mandate was to ensure that the three United Nations Protected Areas (UNPAs) in Croatia were demilitarized and that all persons residing in them were protected from fear of armed attack†. (Department of Public Information) The mandate was then extended â€Å"In June 1992, as the conflict intensified and extended to Bosnia and Herzegovina, UNPROFORs mandate and strength were enlarged in order to ensure the security and functioning of the airport at Sarajevo, and the delivery of humanitarian assistance to that city and its environs.† There were also hidden dilemmas in the U.N. People were beginning to question whether they were keeping the peace, or forcing the peace unto others. Author Ivo Daalder brought up a controversial point when saying, â€Å"U.N. Protection Force in Bosnia confronted a fateful dilemma. UNPROFOR could actively oppose the Bosnian Serb effort and side with the Muslim victims of the war. But this would entail sacrificing the evenhandedness that is the hallmark of U.N. peacekeeping. Alternatively, UNPROFOR could preserve its much-vaunted neutrality and limit its role to protecting humanitarian relief supplies and agencies. But this would effectively leave the Muslims to face the Bosnian Serb assault virtually unprotected.† (Daalder). After the war the U.N is criticized with not having allocated enough time and effort into the Bosnian War. They did not help out enough until the very end and in some regards are held accountable for the Mass Genocide that occurred on their watch. This is what happened with the case in Rwanda. They did not offer aid or assistance until the very end and because of that countless people die. Back on topic, the UNPROFOR was fighting to keep Sarajevo open. They tried to keep Sarajevo open in order to deliver much needed aid however much of the aid did not reach them. It was later recorded that only about 50% of the total aid reached the areas that were most affected. The reasoning behind this was that the continued fighting prohibited the cargo from reaching certain places. In an US Secretary-General Report â€Å"one UNHCR convoy on its way from Zagreb to Sarajevo had to pass some 90 roadblocks, many of them manned by undisciplined and drunken soldiers of no clear political affiliation† (US Secretary General). In addition to the Mandate the U/N also enforced a â€Å"No Fly Zone†. This meant that they banned all military flights in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The U.N also established â€Å"safe areas† around Bosnian and the city of Sarajevo where an airport they were using was located. The public as well as the people in the safe areas expected UNPROFOR troops to protect them, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, and, possibly, get them out of these places. However, none of this could be easily delivered. This was because Humanitarian convoys were often halted on the way, usually prior to some military intervention of the Bosnian Serb army. The Bosnian Serbian Army would halt aid because it was going toward the Muslim communities that they were fighting. The UNPROFOR troops did not have sufficient enough numbers or weapons to protect themselves against the Serbian Army. Word was being spread around the world about the war in Bosnia. The media would â€Å"include footage from World War II concentration camps to draw parallels between the past slaughter of Jews and the current slaughter of Muslims by European Christians.† (Hedge). The Serbians were sweeping across Bosnia raiding in destroying predominately Muslim communities. They were better armed, allowing them to slaughter the Muslims who had barely any weaponry. They would leave death and destruction in their wake. When they would go into the villages they would commit as they called it â€Å"Ethnic cleansing† and mass rape. It would later be discovered that most of the people who committed these heinous crimes were mostly from the Bosnian Serbian community. Due to these crimes the United Nations Security Council created Resolution 808 which read an international tribunal shall be established for the prosecution of persons responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia since 1991. As of 2011 they had finally caught the last fugitive to be indicted for his war crimes â€Å"The Yugoslav war crimes tribunal crowned 18 years of operations on Wednesday with the capture of the last of 161 suspects from the wars of the 1990s† (Traynor). Culture played a huge card in this war. â€Å"a cultural dimension, marked by the intentional destruction of historical monuments and cultural artifacts — it has been estimated that by the end of 1992 up to 70 percent of the architectural inheritance of Bosnia-Herzegovina had been damaged or destroyed, including over 300 mosques, 150 Orthodox churches, and 50 Catholic churches†.(Vreme) As the Serbians were going through villages they were destroying any religion affiliated with the enemy. They only wanted things left standing that were important to them. â€Å"Many of these atrocities had an explicitly anti-Muslim character, and were justified as acts of historical revenge directed against the Ottoman legacy, â€Å"the continuation in an extreme form of a process of de-Islamization that had begun decades earlier.†(Mazower)† (Nation) Around this same time there was a treaty that would negotiate peace plans in Bosnia. It called for a multiethnic Bosnia. This plan was presented to the Bosnian Serbian Army. They went on to reject the initial plan and the continued fighting. Due to this turn of events NATO was on reserve to initiate and air strike in accordance the U.N. In 1994 Nato began its first air strikes killing 64 people and injuring plenty other. They became more involves with some of their jets were gunned down. Things starting looking bleak and the war continued through most of 1995. After this time the Clinton Administration decided to take action. This is how the war ultimately got decided. The Clinton Administration created a solution with the help of Madeleine Albrigh who went on to say that the UNPROFO hindered rather than help peace agreements in Bosnia. Instead she along with her follow people helped find a new solution, â€Å"The outlines of such a solution, which was based on the Contact Group plan of 1994, included: recognition of Bosnias sovereignty and territorial integrity within its existing borders; division of Bosnia into two entities—a Bosnian Serb entity and a Muslim-Croat federation; entity borders would be drawn in a compact and defensible manner, with the federation territory accounting for at least 51 percent of the total; and acceptance of special parallel relationships between the entities and neighboring states including the possibility of conducting a future referendum on the possibility of secession† (Daalder). The war end ed with the Dayton Peace Agreement signed on 21 November 1995. The final version was signed on 14 December 1995 in Paris. In conclusion, the U.N was ineffective in its efforts to stop the Bosnian War. They tried to send supplied but the cargo did not reach its destination half of the time. The troops were not armed well enough to put up a fight against the Serbians. Countless people died because they refused to take the drastic measures necessary to stop the War before it escalated. The U.S had to intervene and with them came the plan that ultimately ended the war peacefully. After the war the TCPY arrested and charged 161 people with War crimes that violated Resolution 808. Trends In Economic Botany: The Rising Use Of Herbal Supplements The use of herbal remedies to treat health problems in humans is a tradition that dates back many centuries. A precursor to modern, Western pharmaceuticals, traditional healers used herbs to treat a wide range of ailments and afflictions. While many are familiar with their use by American Indians, the practice of herbal therapy dates back to ancient Chinese and Egyptian healers. Herbs were used in ancient times to treat anything from headaches (with willow bark tea, now an active ingredient in aspirin) to fever and premenstrual syndrome (with chamomile). In an age of modern pharmaceuticals and their ready availability in Western culture, it is easy to forget that approximately 40% of today's modern medicines are produced with chemicals derived from plants (Counter 1998). In a trend reversal that has the modern medical community alarmed and puzzled, the sales of herbal remedies in the Untied States has increased dramatically. Traditionally, Europe has been the largest market for herbal remedies, accounting for 45% or $7.5 billion in sales for 1997 (Scimone and Scimone 1998). Within Europe, Germany dominates the market with sales of $3.6 billion, followed by France ($1.8 billion), Italy ($800 million) and the United Kingdom ($300 million) (Scimone and Scimone 1998). Growth in the European market was predicted to be 5-10% in 1998-1999 and 15-20% in 1999-2000 (Scimone and Scimone 1998). The European market has become solidly established over the past 80 years, with a modest growth rate until recent years that has shown another upward trend. The United States market is a completely different story. The herbal industry has "evolved exponentially over the past two years, with significant entry into the mass market within the past two years" (Botanicals International 1998). Sales of herbal supplements reached $4 billion in 1998, up from $1.6 billion in 1994 , a rise of 250% (American Botanical Council 1998). Sales have been projected to increase between 50-100% in 1998-99 and between 20-25% in 2000-01(Scimone and Scimone 1998). What has caused this dramatic increase? While an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine (1998) blamed this "reversion to irrational approaches" on "disillusionment with the often hurried and impersonal care delivered by conventional physicians", it is also viewed as the economic influence of the aging baby-boomers. As they have become older, this generation has become more health conscious and increasingly dissatisfied with conventional medicine in their attempts to diminish the adverse effects of aging (Brenneman 1999).

How to Cram for the SAT 10-Day, 200-Point Prep Plan

How to Cram for the SAT 10-Day, 200-Point Prep Plan SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you’re reading this guide, I’m going to assume you don’t have a lot of time before your SAT test date. If you do have a lot of time before your SAT test date (one month or more), feel free to read this article for useful tips, but I urge you to spread your prep out over the full amount of time you have. Do not wait to cram. The total amount of time spent preparing for the SAT matters, and though you can make great strides in just 10 days, you still need to put in the time. I’ll guide you through the steps to successfully cram for the SAT and raise your score by up to 200 points. WARNING: You should not use this SAT cram guide unless absolutely necessary. If you'll have the chance to take the SAT another time, after this test, I recommend doing quick basic preparation for this test date (following the beginning of this guide) and then do a more extensive study program for the next test date. Consider trying PrepScholar or another prep program before your next SAT test date. If you decide to use this cramming study guide, it is a very ambitious plan that requires tremendous dedication to be successful. All that being said, if you do decide to follow this plan, I've outlined two preliminary steps below, followed by the fast SAT prep plan itself. Print Your Practice Material All of the new SAT practice tests created by the College Board are currently available online for free. Print yourself copies of the first four of these free SAT PDFs. I’ll tell you how/when to use them below. Create a Schedule You need to create a strict study schedule and stick to it. With only 10 days to get a 200 point score increase, 30 minutes per day is not going to do it. Here at PrepScholar, we recommend fitting in about 80 hours of preparation if you’re hoping for a 200 point score improvement. You need to compress that study schedule into 10 days. Although fitting in 80 hours will be nearly impossible in 10 days (especially if you have school), you probably don’t need quite that much time since cramming gives you the advantage of not losing your muscle memory for test techniques. I’ve created a sample schedule below that fits in 55 hours of prep into the 10 days before the test. Day # of Hours to Study Wednesday 5 Thursday 5.5 Friday 5.5 Saturday 9 Sunday 10 Monday 5 Tuesday 5 Wednesday 5 Thursday 5 Friday 0 Saturday 0- Take the Test! If you’re on summer vacation, great: you’ll have plenty of free time to commit to this schedule. If you’re attempting to do fast prep during the school year, however, you’ll need to prioritize your SAT prep above all else. It’s only for 10 days! I’ve outlined the plan for each day below. 10-Day Prep Plan Before starting this plan, read through what you'll need for each day (both in terms of time and materials). You don't want to block out six hours of study time only to realize that you've left your graphing calculator at school. Note: This study plan is tailored to students taking the Saturday SAT. If you'll be taking the SAT on a Sunday or during the week in school, you may have to move around the hours for some of the days so that you don't end up having to study for 10 hours on a schoolday. Day 1: Wednesday- 5-5.5 Hours Goals for the day: Familiarize yourself with the test format, pick a target score, and take a practice test. Familiarize Yourself With the Test Format- 15 Minutes Knowing the test format will be a huge advantage when you take the test, I recommend you read through these guides: New SAT in 2016: Reading Section What's Actually Tested on SAT Math? How Do You Calculate SAT Score? Raw and Scaled By the end of reading these guides, you’ll have a basic familiarity with what’s tested on both sections of the test and how your final score is calculated, which is important to know in order to understand SAT strategy. Pick a Target Score- 30 Minutes If you haven’t already, you need to figure out your target score. I won’t go into depth here because we’ve already got another great guide on picking your target score for your college. However, the short explanation of how to pick your target score is to aim for a score at or above the 75th percentile score for admits at your target school. Having a target score will help you stay motivated during your 10 days of preparation. Write the number somewhere important like on your desk, and tell your parents your target score. Putting it out there will make you more motivated to reach it. Take a Practice Test- 3 Hours 45 Minutes Take your first practice test using one of these free SAT PDFs. Make sure to use one of the most recent tests, so your practice test is as similar as possible to your actual SAT test. Stick to the exact timing. Each section will have the timing listed at the start of the section. Try to imitate the testing conditions. Find a quiet space where you can be alone. Review and Analyze Your Practice Test- 1 Hour Once you’ve completed your practice test, review your practice test following the steps outlined in this guide and grade your essay using the SAT essay rubric. Analyze your test after you’ve reviewed: Which section was your weakest? Why was it your weakest? Were your issues mainly not understanding the content or did you make more careless errors? Did you not understand the questions? Did you run out of time? If you cannot readily identify your weakest section (i.e. if your Math and Evidence-based Reading and Writing scores were similar), you should try to identify the one in which you got the most questions wrong because you did not understand the content or information necessary to answer the question. Content issues are impossible to overcome without studying, yet they are the easiest mistake type to fix because all you need to do is simply learn the necessary content. You need to start by identifying your weakest section because that is what you'll prioritize in your study. You’ll still learn the techniques/strategies for each section, but you should begin with your weakest section. Day 2: Thursday- 5.5 Hours Goals for the day: Learn the strategies for your weakest section and try to apply them to a practice test. You should have identified your weakest section yesterday. Today, you’ll learn the strategies for that section and practice applying them. I’m providing links to all of the guides you should read to help with strategy and content knowledge for your weakest section. It’s a lot of material, so try to prioritize the topics within each section that you need the most help in (for example, sentence completion in the Critical Reading section). If there is a topic you aren't missing any questions on, don't bother reading that guide now. For example, if you aren't missing any triangle questions, you should not read the triangle guide. Prioritize the guides: start with the overall strategies, then check out guides on your weakest content areas (for example, if you got all of the circle questions wrong in the Math section, start by reading the circle question article). If you don’t have time to read it all in two hours, don’t worry, simply bookmark the articles you didn’t get to read. I set aside time another day in the schedule to review the rest of the articles. Since there are four days and four practice tests, you should be reviewing one test per day. I recommend rewriting the questions you missed on a separate sheet of paper (or printing out a new copy of the test) and attempting to answer the questions again. If you answer correctly, move on. If you're still answering the question incorrectly, ask yourself why you got it wrong? Is there a specific subject area that you're not very knowledgeable about? Again, refer back to our other articles for help in any areas that you haven't fully mastered. You can also try out some official topic-specific practice problems at Khan Academy. These can help you hone the skills you're still struggling with. Day 10: Friday- 0 Hours Relax! You've put in the work. I recommend taking the day before off to let your mind rest and process everything you've done. Exercise, eat healthy meals, and go to bed early. Try to get a full eight hours. Be sure to pack your test ticket, calculator, pencils, erasers, extra batteries, snacks, etc. the night before, so you’re not scrambling the morning of the test. Day : Saturday- 0 Hours Take the test! Wake up at least an hour before you need to leave for your testing center. This way you’ll have plenty of time to eat a big breakfast. Contamination at the Site Processes involved in the smelting and foundry activities in the process of exploiting brass posed certain risks of contamination to the soil and water in the area. Contamination at the site was also evident at other materials at the site. As outlined by EPA, the soil and water exhibited the highest rate of contamination, although a range of media at the site also exhibited a level of contamination. These media include fish media, sediment, fish tissue, and groundwater. Evidently, contamination occurred on both liquid-based and solid-based media. This contamination was associated with the waste handling process at the site during the brass smelting process. It appears that the relevant efficiency in waste handling was not attained, contributing to a high risk factor of contamination to all the media at the site(United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2013). The contamination posed increased health threats because it affected the shallow water sources, the soils on site, and sediments. Assessment of the risk revealed that the highest contamination at the site was at the area in closest proximity to the smelting and foundry facility that lay on the site. It is worth noting that thorough assessment of the extent of contamination revealed that the drinking water in the adjacent residences was free from the contamination emanating from the site. Contaminants of Concern Analysis and assessment of the evident contamination resulting from the waste handling processes at the site revealed that several contaminants deserving serious concern were evident at the site. Experts highlighted that both metals and polychlorinated biphenyls were the contaminants posing the greatest risk at the site. Investigations on the area highlighted that the metal boron and lead were some of the leading contaminants of concern. Other monitoring processes that analyzed the level of contamination in the wells revealed the presence of nitrate and ammonia as some of the critical contaminants. EPA experts working on the site identified these as the major contaminants posing health risks to the people living in the proximity of the site as well as those proving detrimental to the environment. Clean up Measures Utilized The cleanup activities are planned in a specific order beginning with extensive studies of the site, selection of the most effective remedy, designing the remedy, construction of the remedy plan and post-constructio n activities(United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2013). Usually, EPA takes different clean up measures depending on the level of contamination at the site. Whereas some sites require energy action followed by a long-term remedial action plan of comprehensively studying the site ad developing an effective, clean up resolution.
